Van Gogh Quotes
Vincent van Gogh had an interesting and tumultuous life. As you would expect, he has a number of great quotes about painting, life and the nature of things.
I recently had a chance to go to the new van Gogh interactive exhibit here in Asheville, N.C. It was awesome and I can highly recommend the exhibit. Part of the exhibit had some van Gogh quotes. Most of them were very interesting so I decided to do a bit of research and find a few quotes to post here.
“For my part, I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.”
This quote reminds me a bit of Starry, Starry night. It seems to me that it’s a bit of a dreamscape.
“When I have a terrible need of – shall I say the word – religion. Then I go out and paint the stars.”
Van Gogh has a lot of quotes that talk about other people. Here’s one/.
“I wish they would only take me as I am.”
He had several interesting thoughts and quotes about the environment and nature.
It is not the language of painters but the language of nature which one should listen to, the feeling for the things themselves, for reality is more important than the feeling for pictures.
“If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.”
“The fishermen know that the sea is dangerous and the storm terrible, but they have never found these dangers sufficient reason for remaining ashore.”
Keep your love of nature, for that is the true way to understand art more and more.
